HP Pavilion DV2-1030US 12.1-Inch Laptop Review

This laptop hit the sweet spot for me. I had a netbook, the MSI Wind, and it was great for what it was. However, the 1024x600 screen size was a constant issue for me..many programs weren't really happy with that resolution. My eyes are fine, and screen size isn't an issue, but the resolution was.
So my next laptop I also wanted it to be ultraportable, but I need a 720p minimum size resolution AND a discrete graphics card (and NOT an Intel.) I previously had dell 17" with a Nvidia 7900m GO video card - it was basically my traveling gaming laptop - however the size and weight got to be way too much for me.
The DV2 has everything I need, and these are some notable features.
- A discrete video card, ATI 3410 512MB (had to play TF2 and City of Heroes with no problem - I like to do light gaming). It's a decent card, but it won't replace a real strong gaming laptop or desktop but enough for my needs. This chart helps explain how the video cards stack up:[...]
- Screen size - 1280x800, a good solid resolution
- 4GB, Vista home premium 64 (on the 1030us model)
- Clear screen, but not a great viewing angle
- Lightweight, 3.8 lbs
- Cheap (

Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 92 percent full-sized keyboard and a touchpad with a scroll zone.
Screen, Video & Audio You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 12.1-inch WXGA high-definition LED BrightView screen, which contains no mercury and is more efficient and thus draws less battery power. It has a widescreen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels--perfect for watching DVD movies the way they were meant to be seen. Video is powered by the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3410, which provides 512 MB of discrete graphics memory (for 2302 MB of total available graphics memory). ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series graphics processors have breakthrough efficiency, with phenomenal performance-per-watt and energy-saving features. Advance to the power of discrete graphics for HD gaming with best-in-class performance, amazing effects, and lifelike worlds and characters delivering a compelling gaming experience.
The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and it also includes SRS Premium Sound.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Wi-Fi chip. I just received this laptop yesterday and have begun putting it through its paces. I'll update the review in the future but as there are no reviews yet I wanted to get it started in case there are others that are considering this model.
I'd consider myself a moderate user. General office programs (word and powerpoint for classwork), internet browsing w/HD video streaming, netflix streaming, some photo editing, music, etc. I wanted something thin and light that also offered more oomph than a mobile ulv processor. The i3 in this laptop just screams compared to an AMD Neo 1.5ghz powered Toshiba that I tried out before settling on this model. Battery life after the initial break-in charge and drain and refill has been outstanding. I have 5:31 remaing with 89% battery while I type this. Mind you I've been using it since 100% for about an hour installing 180mb's worth of Windows updates and a reboot. I have it on balanced mode with the screen brightness set to 80%. Wifi on and Word running in the background while researching and typing should yield over 7 hours with the settings I have. To me that's impressive and the Timeline series is living up to its claim. HD video plays well, despite not having a dedicated graphics card. I think that's why you'll find the price on this model to be a little lower than other comparable Acer and ASUS models. I debated between this model and an ASUS that was near the same price point. However the ASUS models near this price point had an ULV processor, so the Acer won out. Build quality is solid, no flex in the keyboard. The screen is bright and vivid. So far I'm quite happy with the choice. As I said to open, I'll update this later.UPDATE:
Now that I've spent some time with the keyboard and track pad I find both to be easy to use. The mutli-gesture track pad works well and the swirls gesture makes scrolling down long web pages or easy. It's great if you're a tumblr user and want to scroll down your dashboard. The keyboard has great tactile feedback and the reaches are a little short but I found it quite easy to adjust coming from and excellent Fujitsu keyboard. I left the battery setting where I had previously mentioned and have had no trouble hitting 7 usable hours of battery life with wifi some HD streaming and light word usage. Still a 5 star product and the price point is great.
Pro's
-Build quality
-battery life
-keyboard
-display
Con's
-426 GB of usable HD space, 463 of actual space with OS loaded and the bloatware. I've been around long enough to know that HD space is never as it's listed, but Acer, where did my 37 GB's go?!?
Windows experience index....
Processor - 6.7
Memory - 5.9
Graphics - 4.5
Gaming Graphics - 5.2
Primary Hard Disk - 5.8

Sony VAIO VPC-F137FX/B 16.4-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

I bought my Sony Vaio 9 months ago with an extended warranty. It worked well for 6 months until one day the speakers completely died on me.
I have spent the next 3 months trying to get Sony to repair the laptop for me. I spent the first month just on the phone, trying to convince tech support that my computer had had a hard drive failure. Over the next month-and-a-half they had three appointments where they sent people over to repair my computer. The first time they replaced the speakers, the second time they replaced the motherboard and the third time they replaced the sound card. All three attempts were unsuccessful; the sound still did not work.
My computer is now at a repair center. I have no computer (I had to borrow someone else's computer to write this review).
This is my experience with Sony Vaio. Maybe you'll have a better one. Who knows?

Dell Studio 15 Laptop Review

Dell Studio 15 Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the Dell Studio 15 inch laptop (Green Colored Case). I think this a great lap top and it gets the job done. I kept reading all the negative reviews and i have no idea why there's so much bad press. I have never once called customer service and i ordered my laptop at Dell directly through their website. I have no reason to contact customer service and i never experienced any problems at all with any of my Dell products. I get so baffled when i read all these negative reviews. My Dell products which i have had for years including a Dell desktop and a recently purchased new netbooks have never been a problem. The desk top i have is more than 6 years old and I never have any problems. It runs great. It can definitely benefit from an upgrade in some areas.
The Studio line is Dell's midrange laptops. The Inspiron being there low end range for consumers that just need a standard laptop. The Dell Studio laptop is completely plastic and it's a bit on the heavy side in my opinion. Maybe because i am so use to my light weight Dell 10 min netbook that i have been spoiled. This is a good lap top. However, i think the flaw in Dell is that their products can get very pricey very quickly. Especially when you are adding in high end features like 6GB RAM rather than 3GB RAM or 2.99GHZ instead of 2.33GHZ etc. You can get the same thing at HP for probably around a hundred dollars less and their quality feels a bit more refined, polished, and sturdy. That being said if you check Dell's website they do have deals going on all the time especially on holidays. But for some reason the price never seems as low as it should be. If you check periodically you will find yourself a deal. I go to that website religiously and build the exact same laptop that I have and it always comes up to more money. I got mine on a special promo.
I really regret getting the green covered case. I didn't realize how bright it would be and once i opened it out of the box - I really wish i purchased the Dark Blue or Dark Purple colored case. It's really way too bright. I like the personalization options of the different colors, but i really do regret getting this bright Caribbean green color. My laptop also includes the backlit keyboard which is great for typing in the dark. It also has touch sensitive controls towards the top of the keyboard near the speakers and i think that's a great plus. The DVD is also an optical drive, so there is no door that slides out for you to pop in your DVD. It's like a Playstation 3 slot. You slide the DVDs in & out.
Pros:
15 inch screen
Optical DVD slot
4GB RAM
750 GB Memory
2.66GHZ
Backlit keyboard
4 UBS slots
HDMI outport
Sleak shiek design
Different colored cases
Wi-Fi
Webcam
Cons:
Windows Vista (Super Whack)
A bit pricey in my opinion (That's Dell for you)
A bit on the heavy side

Sony VAIO VPC-YB15KX/S 11.6-Inch Laptop (Silver) Review

Sony VAIO VPC-YB15KX/S 11.6-Inch Laptop (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So I bought this for traveling and I was expecting a decent Netbook from Sony. Unfortunately Sony only partly came through with that goal. I think it is a very good Netbook but not a good ultra portable. The positives first. The key spacing makes typing better but the with keys themselves are too small. Bigger keys closer together would have worked better. The screen is very sharp and bright. The features are nice with HDMI, VGA video outs. 3 USB ports and very good speed from the AMD Fusion APU which is Advanced Processor Unit. A CPU/GPU combination. It provides good graphics and Video playback.
OK here is the bad. The sound is awful! Get a pair of headphones because anywhere but a quiet room and you won't hear it.
Battery life is not great for a Netbook. Sony really skimped on the battery. Touchpad is too small, and even though it offers multi gestures you won't use them because its too small. The camera is very poor quality, the WiFi only connects up too 65Mbps in G and N mixed mode. Also experiences WiFi connection drops. The "Value Added" software from Sony is primarily redundent with Windows 7 already having tools to do the same functions better. They really slow the computer and cause the fan to run more. When I uninstalled most of the Sony software the computer ran much better. Why companies really handicap their own computers with this crap is beyond me? So in closing I think for the money Sony could have done better, but the saving grace of this computer is the very responsive AMD APU. Some have mentioned the HP model similar to the Sony's. I agree it does have a bit better battery specs. Although I found HP to have a much worse defect record so I passed on HP. You may find its worth the risk for the better specs.

HP ENVY 15-1050NR 15.6-Inch Laptop (Magnesium Alloy) Review

HP ENVY 15-1050NR 15.6-Inch Laptop (Magnesium Alloy)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had the Envy 15 for over three months and have enjoyed almost every minute of it. I have been very pleased with its performance and ease of use. The processor is simply amazing, the video card is more than enough for my needs, and the screen is the best I've seen in a laptop. I consider myself a pretty heavy user, often running more than 150 processes at a time, and rarely feel any lag. For the power you get, the size and weight are pretty impressive. The laptop does get warm when under heavy use, as is to be expected with a quad-core machine, but its quiet, effective cooling system does a great job of keeping the system within acceptable/tolerable temperature limits.
The drawbacks, as I expected, relate to its battery power. The processor is restricted to a "Low Frequency Mode" when running on battery power, which for the i7-720QM limits the processor speed to 931 MHz per core. This results in a noticeable difference when doing anything more than simple tasks such as reading e-mail or browsing the web while running on battery power. Despite this restriction, the battery life still isn't very impressive. Under normal use, it runs for just under two hours; under heavy use (3D gaming or streaming HD video), it only runs for about an hour on a charge.
In short, if you find yourself near a plug most of the time, this machine is awesome. If you need more portability, this probably isn't the best choice - you might want to consider something with a dual-core i5 processor.
