(More customer reviews)I bought an HDX16T with the following specifications: 1080p 16" screen, T6600 @2.2GHz, 4GB DDR2 666MHz, 9600M GT 512MB DDR2, Lightscribe DVD recorder, 320GB HDD, fingerprint reader. The item cost me 565GBP at the time including shipping and customs (Oct09).
The first thing that someone will notice is always the dazzling looks. HP did a real good job here on the design. The sleek finish will always leave people complimenting the awesome design. The outer shell is somewhat susceptible to scratching (which is tough to fix due to the design) but still gives a good lock. The glowing HP sign is a plus and the frontplate/keyboard/touchpad area is also putting this laptop way ahead of others when it comes to aesthetics. I would say there are few better without going over the top.
The laptop is mostly aimed at media users. The screen is a good size, especially for those who think 15.6" is too small but 17" is too large, and the resolution is strong. The graphics card can quite easily keep up with a somewhat intensive gaming demand and the other specifications don't do much to bottleneck. Overall I would say the performance is relatively strong.
The laptop also has some interesting features. The touchpad above the keyboard makes easy communication with controls such as the volume. This being a media orientated laptop, these can be quite useful. The issue is that some are equally useless, especially once you uninstall the HP softwares that is given with fresh install to seemingly do nothing but slow down your system. The fingerprint reader is a nice novelty and I doubt one will get bored of it after it's been configured and the IR sensor on the front is also a welcome addition when using the remote. However the remote itself doesn't seem to be very good at communicating with the laptop and the controls are lost if you uninstall the HP software or use a different media player from what is expected.
The main issue with the laptop is the overheating. This will certainly cause problems sooner or later. About 7 months after using my system I found that an adversely large temperature was being used for normal operation. This problem is seemingly prominent in all HPs. I have attempted to fix this myself and applying a decent thermal paste (as opposed to the really bad stock items that HP use), such as AS5, is recommended. Getting into the system, however, is tough as it seems that HP have designed the laptop like a booby trap when it comes to disassembling it (literally everything has to be taken apart to access the CPU/GPU). After finding the problem to re-occur after some months I sent it to HP, their customer support was quite pleasant, and they fixed the issue with a heat sink replacement. I have come to understand that the heatsinks distort under heat which could be due to the long hours of gaming that I have put it under. I doubt the problem will remain fixed but I am over a year into use and quite pleased with the system. Now and then I might have to do something like replace the thermal paste or the heatsink but it seems to operate well otherwise. I have used it particularly heavy (anything up to 16 hours a day).
Overall I would say that the purchase was worthwhile even if it is somewhat old and outdated now. Similar products might be worth investing in although make sure you find a laptop with good ventilation as the air ducts on this are awful, meaning I have to keep it risen whenever I use it.
