(More customer reviews)Mine was a closeout special from one of the big box stores, so the price was right and I needed an up to date laptop for work.
Only 3 gb RAM, but it's easy to upgrade the memory as there are two slots. I let it keep the 2 gb stick and replaced the 1 gb with a 4gb to bring it up to 6 gb total, which it recognized immediately.
The keyboard will take some getting used to. It looks and feels halfway between a real keyboard and one of those chicklet things. Touch typists and ctrl-key wizards will need to look for the little bumps on the F and J keys to avoid the fisher-price busy box row of dedicated WTF keys on the left. E.g., "Ctrl" is right next to the dedicated "calculator" key. I want to copy and paste, not calculate. Argggh.
I don't know if the screen is supposed to be mirror-shiny or I just haven't figured out how to get the protective plastic off. It's useful if you want to see if the boss is sneaking up behind you, but it also reflects the lights, the glare from the windows, and my own ugly mug. I guess I'll be looking for a non-reflective overlay so I don't traumatize myself.
Battery life is good, wifi (B/G/N) works nicely, no webcam (you hardly need one with a screen that shiny), runs fairly cool and quiet. Also works great with my T-Mobile Rocket mobile broadband stick.
Comes with the usual amount of brand name PC bloatware and trialware, so allow time for uninstalling and tuning. Tip: replace the crapware with PortableApps on a USB stick -- free, private, and you have your apps and data with you anywhere you go.
Recovery media is not included. I ordered a set of discs from HP for less than $20.
Bottom line: If I drop it or lose it, I won't have to go broke replacing it. It does what it needs to do, without frills or bling.
