Last year, our tech people did an informal survey to ask us what kind of computer we wanted as our new work-supplied computer (laptop/desktop; Mac/PC). We chose a PC laptop. If I had known they were going to pick this type of computer, I would have picked the other option. This computer has been nothing but a frustration since they first gave it to me, and I perceive them all to be design flaws, which means they can't be fixed. First of all, within two weeks of getting it the wireless antenna just disappeared. It didn't just stop working, it was like even the ability to pick up WiFi on this computer was gone. I searched the computer up and down and couldn't find the hardware or the driver for it. So I sent it back to our IT department and got my old reliable Dell laptop back. It sat there for a week and they couldn't figure it out, either. But right before they sent it off to HP, they turned it back on and the antenna magically reappeared. Amazing.
Also, the keyboard and mousepad are daily sources of frustration. I would consider myself a fast typist (maybe 60-70 wpm) and the keyboard has constant trouble keeping up with me. It will frequently drop the letters out of the middle of words (for example, the word "example" may just end up "exle". That's not a typo. This isn't transposing two letters or missing one. This is a definite keyboard flaw. Just to spice things up, sometimes it will add extra strokes of the same key ("exxxxxxammmmmmple"). There's no rhyme or reason about this. It's just something that happens.
By far the worst thing about this computer is the trackpad area. It is set flush against the handrest, meaning that if you are dumb enough to have your "tap to click" turned on, you are constantly and randomly moving your cursor around when you are trying to type. And since there are no dedicated buttons on the pad (you just press an area of the pad, like a MacBook Pro), there's almost no way you can click the correct button (or any button for that matter) without looking down at it. This works fine when you have a large area to work with (like on the MacBook Pro), but on the extra-small trackpad of this computer it's maddening.
So, in conclusion, I'm stuck with mine. It stinks, but at least it's free, right? If you have any choice at all, pick something else. You'll never get comfortable with how this computer is designed.
