(More customer reviews)My employer bought 27 of these machines in December of 2009. In January of 2011, just over a year after obtaining them, we have had five hard drive failures, four keyboard failures, and one wireless card failure.
When they work, they're great; the performance specs out just as well as any mid-priced discount laptop on any of the internet retailers. For this kind of money, though, you should expect more than a 33% failure rate inside of one year.
(If you do have to get one for some reason, though, do NOT spend extra on the rubberized keyboard unless you plan on repeated dunkings or splashings. While it works wonders for waterproofing, it's nearly impossible to type on with more than two fingers, and as I said above; the failure rate is abysmal. I can't believe we paid an extra $200 per machine for a part that actually decreases the functionality.)
The auto-dimming screen brightness and lighted keyboards are nice features and work well. The "DisplayPort" replacement for HDMI is a great way to make you spend extra money on cords and cables, since standard HDMI cables wont work with this port. The graphics are only capable of running the built-in display and one extra monitor - you can't cheat and use the DisplayPort for one external screen and the VGA port for another.
In short, I no longer recommend Dell to anyone based on my experience with their "top-of-the-line" machines.
(Edited 2/18/11 to add: 6th hard drive out of our 27 computers failed today.)
